Adventure Is Out There!

We are going to Grenada for medical school! The more I say that, the more excited slash nervous slash anxious I get.  And when I say “we” are going to med-school I really mean Austin is going to study his brains out while I lounge on the beach and hike in the rainforest everyday.  This post will kind of serve as an FAQ and something for me to look back on and laugh at how inaccurate my expectations probably are. Just remember that I really actually know nothing about this little rock of a country and my answers were either googled or found on blogs/facebook/the web/friends. So here we go.

Where is Grenada?

Far away. Its off the coast of Venezuela.

What are you going to do all day?

Umm, idunno, I imagine it’ll be pretty hard to stay inside when you’ve got one of the world’s most beautiful beaches and monkey containing rainforests just a couple miles away. But I will be doing school online through BYU independent study until I get my Bachelors in General Studies (they wouldn’t let me do any other major unless I stayed on campus for a couple more semesters…Angry Elf).

What Language do they speak?

English! However, when I talked to the Grenadian realtor on the phone I understood nothing. I caught “hey mon” at the beginning or maybe it was “Hey ma’am” and that’s about it. I’m not sure how I’ll survive when I can’t even understand the person trained to speak to Americans for a living.

Is it safe?

Pretty safe, but since I still get scared that people are out to get me in Provo, Utah and I wont have my ferocious guard cat, Larry, there to protect me. I made sure we got an apartment in one of the safest areas. The area is called Lanse Aux Epines and it is where a lot of professors and students live.

Can I come visit?

People don’t actually ask me this lol. BUT I WISH THEY WOULD! The answer is you better come visit. We have a spacious two-bedroom apartment that is very glamorous and probably has zero bugs in it. Maybe this is an exaggeration and maybe it isn’t. The truth is I don’t actually know this to be true at all because we leased our apartment based on a few pictures off the Internet. But still come visit...it’ll be great!

What is the weather like in Grenada?

Warm and humid. I’ve never lived anywhere humid…this’ll be fun. But having survived multiple track and cross country seasons in Bakersfield, CA I think I’ve got the warm part down. This graph is from the airport weather station and you can’t get more accurate than that…Ain’t that right, Dad?
